The Iceland DC3 Virtual Reality Film project is a real-time immersive experience utilising the Unreal 4 Engine and the latest high detail content generation tools available.
The objective was to recreate the DC-3 Wreckage as accurately as possible and its surrounds, and be able to create a 1:1 virtual reality experience with a HMD such as Oculus/VIVE.
Technical Objectives:
- 90FPS required (persistence)
- Small download size (under 700 mb)
- Real-time lighting PBR
- Accurate collision and navmesh
- High resolution texture (8x8k minimum Mip 6x)
- Non-repeated terrain texture (procedural, multi layer)
- Optimised Parallax textures + normal
- Distance blend for Terrain/Asset merge
- Blueprint gameplay for easy development
- Minimum Spec Nvidia 780M, 8gb Ram i7
One more catch was to do it as quick as possible, which is probably the toughest objective.
The project was ultimately a success with a standalone VR experience currently on Steam Greenlight. The end result will be a Virtual Reality experience demonstrating gamification and total authenticity to the real world site.
Below are some of the assets produced for the film/game/VR experience.
